Elizabethton, TN – Several people have been arrested following a reported act of vandalism at a Carter County cemetery that left dozens of graves damaged last week.
According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a report on Saturday, April 18, 2026, that Walnut Mountain Cemetery had been vandalized overnight on Friday, April 17. Authorities said the incident involved the desecration of more than two dozen graves, along with damage to multiple doors at a nearby church on the property.
Investigators launched an inquiry shortly after the report and were able to identify multiple individuals allegedly connected to the incident. According to the sheriff’s office, several suspects were taken into custody and charged with violation of Tennessee Code Annotated 39-17-311, which covers desecration of a venerated object, and Tennessee Code Annotated 39-14-408, vandalism involving damages between $2,500 and $9,999.
Authorities said a female juvenile was also identified during the investigation and has been charged in connection with the case. Officials did not release the names of those involved due to the ongoing investigation and the age of one suspect.
The cemetery, located in Carter County near Elizabethton in Northeast Tennessee, serves as a burial site for local families, making the damage particularly distressing for the community. Cleanup and repairs are expected to take time as officials assess the full extent of the destruction.
According to deputies, the investigation remains active, and additional charges could be possible as more information is gathered.
