Springfield, IL – Northwest winds gusting up to 35 mph are expected to create blowing dust this afternoon and evening, causing potential hazards for drivers across central Illinois. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for rapid changes in visibility, particularly on rural roads.

According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, winds will be sustained between 15-25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph, creating favorable conditions for dust storms. Motorists are advised to avoid driving into dust plumes if possible. If caught in dense dust, drivers should slow down and pull off the roadway as far as possible to ensure safety.

The weather forecast for the area also includes mostly sunny skies and seasonable temperatures today, with highs ranging from 81-83°F. However, tonight will bring scattered thunderstorms, particularly in west central to southwest Illinois, with temperatures dropping to 60-64°F. The highest coverage of thunderstorms is expected over west central to southwest Illinois, with isolated storms predicted for Saturday. By Sunday and Monday, the region will experience dry conditions with mild temperatures, ranging from 73-80°F.

Travelers on Interstate 55 and other roadways affected by the dust storms should remain vigilant and cautious, as visibility can quickly reduce to near zero in affected areas. With the return of similar conditions, preparedness and caution are key to ensuring safe travel during these adverse weather events.
