Chicago, IL – Scattered thunderstorms with possible hail are forecasted for Memorial Day, potentially affecting outdoor celebrations across the region.

According to the US National Weather Service Chicago, storms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening, with the primary threat being locally damaging wind gusts and small hail. The severe weather window is projected from 4 to 10 p.m. Cooler, dry conditions are expected to follow, lasting through mid to late week.

Residents planning to celebrate Memorial Day outdoors should prepare for the possibility of severe weather. The National Weather Service advises staying indoors if thunder is heard and having multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Gusty winds accompanying the storms could cause damage to trees and power lines, while occasional lightning strikes pose an additional hazard.

Following the stormy start to the week, temperatures are expected to drop, bringing cooler and drier conditions. Tuesday will see evening showers, with highs ranging from 70 to 73 degrees. By Wednesday, temperatures will drop further, with highs between 65 to 71 degrees and cooler nighttime lows. Thursday will continue the trend of cool, dry weather, with temperatures ranging from 67 to 74 degrees.
