Duluth, Minnesota – A dangerous window for wildfire ignition will open across northeast Minnesota by late Wednesday morning, where dry air and gusty winds could allow any spark to spread rapidly across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, near-critical fire weather conditions are expected between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday, with relative humidity dropping as low as 20 to 25 percent. South to southeast winds will range from 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching up to 25 mph, creating an environment primed for fast-moving fires.

The highest risk stretches from Duluth through the Iron Range, including communities like Virginia, Hibbing, and International Falls. Fine fuels such as dry grass and brush remain highly combustible, especially with afternoon temperatures climbing into the 70s.

Officials warn that activities like campfires, debris burning, or even equipment use could ignite fires that quickly get out of control. Residents should avoid outdoor burning and secure trailer chains to prevent roadside sparks, especially along corridors like U.S. Highway 53 and Interstate 35.

Conditions will ease after sunset, but fire danger remains elevated into the week. Additional advisories could be issued if dry weather persists.
