KANKAKEE – Health officials reported three additional deaths Tuesday and 11 new residents hospitalized as cases continue rising across Kankakee.

During a COVID-19 update this afternoon, state officials announced TIER 3 mitigations would begin in Illinois this Friday. This after several regions in the state, including Region 7, reportedly reached out to the Illinois Department of Public Health as beds are running low locally in area hospitals.

“We have issues in Region 7,” IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said Tuesday, adding Region 1 and other places had recently reached out to the Illinois Department of Public Health for running out of beds or say that they have no beds available.

There are now 97 residents occupying beds for COVID-19 in Kankakee among the 3,437 active cases in the county.

Tuesday, 181 newly confirmed cases were reported by the Kankakee County Health Department.  Region 7’s positivity is now the highest in all of Illinois at 20.3%.
