Springfield, IL – Southern and Central Illinois are on high alert today as severe weather threatens the region.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued warnings for potentially hazardous conditions including damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes, primarily affecting areas south of Interstate 70. This severe weather outbreak is expected to peak this afternoon, with storm activity forecasted between 2 PM and 9 PM.

According to the latest updates, central Illinois will face an enhanced risk of severe weather, categorized at level 3 of 5, indicating significant potential for storm-related damage. The more northern areas, including cities near Kankakee, will experience slightly less severe conditions with a risk level of 2.

Residents in the enhanced risk zones are advised to prepare for the possibility of extreme weather, take precautions early, and stay informed through local alerts. The storms are anticipated to bring a cooler air mass into the region, leading to more seasonable temperatures and clearer skies heading into the weekend.
