Starting Friday, March 24, the Illinois Department of Transportation will begin joint repairs and patching on the Interstate 80 bridges between Rowell and Wheeler Avenues in Joliet. The repairs will require ramp and lane closures over four extended weekends, weather permitting.
Lane closures on westbound I-80 will take place between Rowell and Wheeler Avenues. The ramp from Chicago Street (U.S. 52/Illinois 53) to westbound I-80 will also be closed during this time, with motorists advised to follow the posted detour to access the expressway.
To avoid the area, motorists traveling through the region should consider alternative routes as local streets are unable to accommodate heavy or wide trucks. At least one westbound I-80 lane will remain open at all times and eastbound I-80 will not be affected.
The ramp and all lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, March 27. The eastbound I-80 ramp to Richards Street is also closed for reconstruction and expected to reopen later this spring. Additional lane and ramp closures are scheduled for approximately three weekends, alternating between westbound and eastbound I-80, weather permitting. No closures are planned for the Easter holiday weekend from April 7 to April 10.
