Investigation Underway in Kankakee Following Death of Shapiro Developmental Center Resident

Kankakee, Illinois – An investigation is underway following the death of Isaiah Shelton, 22, a resident of Shapiro Developmental Center, the Kankakee County Coroner’s Office confirmed. 

Shelton passed away on December 19, 2023, after being involved in multiple incidents on the same day. According to the Coroner’s Thursday press release, Shelton initially fled the facility, leading to an encounter with law enforcement and subsequent hospitalization for mental health evaluation. Despite being medically cleared, he fled again and was later found unresponsive. 

An autopsy indicated no trauma or foul play related to the law enforcement encounter. The investigation by the Coroner’s Office focuses on the events leading to Shelton’s death, with a final cause of death pending additional testing.
