Kankakee Woman Charged with Starting Fire That Killed Husband

KANKAKEE, Ill. — Tammy Spencer, 57, was arrested Monday and charged with the death of her husband, Phillip Spencer, in connection with a residential fire at 455 E. Bourbonnais St. on February 2, 2023, according to a joint press release from the Kankakee Fire Department and Kankakee Police Department.

The Kankakee Fire Department responded to the structure fire around 9:45 p.m. on February 2. During the investigation, Phillip Spencer was found dead inside the residence, and the fire was deemed suspicious in nature.

After a thorough investigation, Kankakee Fire/Arson Investigators and Kankakee Police Detectives arrested Mrs. Spencer and charged her with starting the fire and the death of Mr. Phillip Spencer.

“The skilled investigation work from both the Kankakee Police and Kankakee Fire Department’s investigators led to Mrs. Spencer’s arrest,” the press release stated.

Mrs. Spencer is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty in a court of law.
