HOMER TOWNSHIP — Firefighters battled a large brush fire that threatened a commercial building at 15765 Annico Drive on Thursday. The fire was reported at around 6 p.m., and the Northwest Homer Fire Protection District quickly responded to the scene.
The fire grew rapidly due to strong winds and dry conditions, prompting the district to issue a second alarm. Firefighters from neighboring districts were also called to assist in extinguishing the blaze.
“Please avoid the area of 159th & Annico along with South Bell Rd & Mackinac Rd,” Homer Township Fire Protection District said in a post to social media Thursday. “These areas will be affected for an extended period of time.”
In addition to the Annico Drive fire, firefighters also responded to another brush fire at 167th and Bell. The staging companies were backfilling as crews worked to contain both fires.
No injuries have been reported in either blaze, but several businesses were evacuated as a precaution.
The cause of the fires is still under investigation.
The Northwest Homer Fire Protection District is reminding residents to exercise caution and avoid the general area.
This is a developing story.
