CHICAGO, IL – A student at Nichols Middle School in Evanston, IL, was hospitalized after consuming a marijuana-infused edible, which was given to them by another student at the school.
The incident occurred in violation of the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 student handbook, which prohibits drugs on school grounds and at school-related events.
Principal Marcus Wright informed families in a message that the student’s reaction after consuming the edible was noticed by a staff member, who then alerted the administration team. The student was subsequently rushed to the emergency room with the support of their guardian.
Wright confirmed that the student is now stable and recovering well. However, he emphasized that the school administration takes such incidents seriously and has launched an investigation into the matter. The edible has been confiscated, and the families of those involved have been contacted.
The student who gave the edible to the hospitalized student has not been identified, and it is unclear whether they will face disciplinary action. The school district’s student handbook categorizes the incident as a Level 4 infraction, which refers to any evidence of substance impairment or possession.
Wright emphasized the need for educating young people on the harmful effects and legalities of using substances of this nature. He pledged that the school administration would take proactive measures to support students in making healthy and informed choices.
