Grand Rapids, MI – A cold front moving through the area has prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids to issue a swim alert for southwestern Michigan beaches along Lake Michigan. Winds are expected to increase tonight, leading to waves building to 3 to 5 feet by daybreak Thursday. The highest waves, ranging from 4 to 5 feet, are predicted south of Whitehall.
According to the NWS, beaches between St. Joseph and Manistee are particularly at risk, with winds expected to reach 20 to 25 mph. The NWS has advised against swimming, noting that conditions are extremely dangerous. “Do not swim” warnings are in effect for areas with waves over 3 feet.
Thursday’s weather forecast indicates scattered afternoon showers north of I-96, with cooler conditions and highs from 70 to 75 degrees. Areas south of I-96 are expected to remain dry.
Looking ahead, the NWS predicts cooler and windier weather will continue into Friday. The weekend forecast includes cloudier skies and a slight chance of rain, particularly late Saturday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 70s, with overnight lows in the low 50s.
Residents and visitors are urged to heed the swim alerts and stay informed about changing weather conditions. For more detailed and up-to-date weather information, consult the National Weather Service.
