New York, NY – Sub-freezing temperatures will grip the East Coast within hours, dropping into the 20s and low 30s overnight and threatening crops, outdoor plumbing, and early Tuesday travel across more than a dozen states.
According to the National Weather Service, a widespread Freeze Warning remains in effect from late Monday night through at least 9 a.m. Tuesday for parts of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and beyond, with some areas extending to 10 or 11 a.m. Temperatures are expected to fall as low as 21 degrees in parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania, with widespread readings between 26 and 32 degrees across the Mid-Atlantic.
Major population centers including New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Raleigh will see temperatures near or below freezing during the morning commute. Key corridors such as I-95, I-76, and I-81 may experience reduced visibility from frost and slick bridge surfaces, especially in rural and elevated areas.
Agricultural impacts are expected to be immediate. Sensitive vegetation and early-season crops face widespread damage, particularly across central Pennsylvania, New Jersey farmland, and Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. In North Carolina and Kentucky, valley locations could see temperatures dip to 28 degrees, increasing frost risk.
Residents are urged to cover plants, bring pets indoors, and protect exposed pipes. Officials recommend draining sprinkler systems and allowing faucets to drip overnight to prevent freezing.
The freeze will ease after mid-morning Tuesday, but additional advisories may expand if temperatures remain below seasonal norms into midweek.
