Momence, IL – Residents of Momence in Kankakee County are bracing for a potential rise in flood stage as the National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a flood watch for the Kankakee River.
The watch comes into effect immediately due to an escalating ice jam situation along the river, particularly impacting the Momence area. The alert covers the river segment from the Illinois/Indiana state line to its meeting point with the Iroquois River at Aroma Park.
As of 8:45 AM CST Sunday, satellite and river gauge data indicated an ice jam extending from near Kankakee to Sun River Terrace, now advancing upstream towards Momence. The water level at Momence was recorded at 4.1 feet.
Experts warn that the river is likely to exceed the flood stage of 5.0 feet near Sun River Terrace and Momence in the coming days if conditions deteriorate. The community is urged to take precautions, especially in areas prone to flooding such as wetlands, forests, parks, and agricultural lands adjacent to the river.
Roadways along the river may also be impacted. Residents and visitors can access updated information and safety guidelines at National Weather Service Flood Safety.
