Michigan City, IN – Northern Indiana officials have issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Lake Michigan beaches as 6-foot waves and dangerous swimming conditions persist through Monday evening. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid entering the water due to life-threatening waves and strong currents.
According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the swim risk is classified as high, with waves reaching 4-6 feet. The hazards are expected to create severe conditions, making it critical to steer clear of piers and avoid swimming. These hazardous conditions are anticipated to persist through the evening as cool, breezy weather continues with temperatures in the mid-60s.
Looking ahead, a warming trend is expected to begin midweek, with temperatures rising significantly by Wednesday. The forecast shows sunny skies with temperatures ranging from 71 to 78 degrees on Tuesday and 80 to 88 degrees on Wednesday. However, showers and potential thunderstorms are predicted for Thursday night as a cold front moves through the region, bringing temperatures down slightly to a high of 88 degrees before dropping to 78 to 88 degrees on Friday.
Residents are advised to stay informed on weather updates and heed all beach safety warnings. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as necessary.
