Omaha, NE – Warm temperatures and gusty winds are raising fire concerns across eastern Nebraska this afternoon, with conditions primed for rapid fire spread through early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, south winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph by mid-afternoon while humidity drops, creating an environment where fires can ignite and spread quickly. High temperatures will reach between 70 and 79 degrees across the region.
Communities including Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, and Council Bluffs face the greatest risk during peak heating hours between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Open areas along I-80 and Highway 75 are especially vulnerable due to dry grasses and steady wind flow.
No widespread burn bans were specified, but officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose materials, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Even small sparks from equipment or vehicles can ignite fires under these conditions.
Winds will ease after sunset, but dry conditions persist into the next few days, meaning fire risks may continue across Nebraska. Additional updates are expected later today if conditions worsen or advisories are expanded.
