Pocatello, Idaho – Drivers heading over Idaho’s higher mountain passes could face snow-covered roads within hours as conditions rapidly deteriorate overnight above 6,500 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midnight tonight through 6 a.m. Thursday for central Idaho’s central regions, including the Lost River Range, Sawtooth Basin, and Sun Valley area. Snow totals between 5 and 9 inches are expected at higher elevations, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph, reducing visibility and creating blowing snow.
Communities such as Stanley, Ketchum, and areas near Galena Summit and Copper Basin will see the greatest impacts. High-elevation routes, including sections of State Highway 75 and backcountry access roads, may become slick or partially snow-covered by early Wednesday morning. The combination of wind and snowfall could make travel hazardous during both the morning and evening commutes Wednesday.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check Idaho 511 for real-time road conditions. Backcountry travelers should prepare for winter conditions, including reduced visibility and drifting snow.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise Thursday, though additional advisories could be issued if snowfall intensifies.
