Raleigh, NC – Wildfires could ignite and spread rapidly across central North Carolina within hours as dry air and gusty winds take hold Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, humidity levels will drop as low as 15 to 25 percent by mid-afternoon Sunday, while northwest wind gusts reach 25 to 35 mph. A passing cold front is expected to bring little to no rainfall, allowing vegetation to dry quickly and increasing the chance of fast-moving fires through early evening.

The elevated risk stretches across the western Piedmont and Sandhills, including Greensboro, Durham, Fayetteville, Sanford, and Rockingham. In urban areas like Raleigh and Durham, roadside grass and wooded edges along I-40 and U.S. 1 could become ignition points. Rural counties such as Moore, Lee, and Montgomery face heightened exposure due to dry fuels and open land.

Officials warn that even small sparks—from discarded cigarettes, machinery, or outdoor burning—could trigger fires that spread بسرعة under these conditions. A statewide burn ban remains in effect, and residents are urged to avoid any open flames and properly dispose of smoking materials.

Conditions worsen again Monday, with continued dry air and gusty winds expected to expand the fire risks across all of central North Carolina. Additional advisories may be issued as the pattern continues.
