Rensselaer, IN – February Complaints Lead to Arrest of Man with Backpack Full of Copper Wire

Rensselaer, IN – Following complaints in February 2024, the Rensselaer Police Department has successfully apprehended a man caught with a backpack laden with copper wire, suspected of being stolen. The arrest was a result of an investigation into burglaries reported in the 700 block of Emmett Avenue, where video evidence allegedly showed a suspect entering a building multiple times to remove items.

The suspect, identified as Gary Mullins, 53, of Rensselaer, was later recognized by officers from the footage. He was reportedly found exiting a treeline near the burglarized business, with the incriminating backpack nearby. Mullins has been charged with three counts of Burglary (Level 5 Felony) and misdemeanor theft, and is now detained at the Jasper County Jail.
