State Representative Lindsay Parkhurst (R – Kankakee) introduced legislation to help expand natural gas services into underserved communities in the 79th District. HB 5124 creates a pilot program within the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to distribute grant funds for the construction of new natural gas pipelines and infrastructure in Pembroke Township.

“There are renewed efforts within Pembroke Township to help bring natural gas to the community,” Rep. Parkhurst said. “Unlike last time, there is a partnership between state, county, and local officials, as well as the utilities. Part of this partnership is to secure state and federal funds necessary to bring this project across the finish line.”

Pembroke Township resides in Southeastern Kankakee County with one municipality, Hopkins Park, and has a population of 2,140 as of the 2010 census. Homes and businesses within Pembroke Township are currently serviced by propane tank.

HB 5124 was introduced on February 13th and awaits committee assignment.
