Rockford, IL – The Rockford area has witnessed a historic snowfall, with parts of the city and surrounding areas reporting record-breaking totals for March 22nd.
The US National Weather Service has confirmed that Rockford smashed its previous daily snowfall record, setting a new high with measurements ranging from 7 to 9 inches across central and northern parts of the city, significantly surpassing the 5.0 inches recorded in 1916. Cherry Valley led the reported totals with an impressive 9.1 inches of snow. Poplar Grove also saw significant accumulation, with 6.6 inches.
Additional reports from the region include the north side of Rockford receiving 7.5 inches, Bull Valley with 6.2 inches, and Harvard at 5.0 inches. Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports each reported a more modest 1.0 inch, while the National Weather Service office in Romeoville noted 0.6 inches of snowfall.
The weather service has highlighted the possibility of more lake effect snow showers near Lake Michigan tonight. However, the forecast is optimistic for the coming days, predicting a drier weekend and warmer temperatures leading into Monday, when rain is expected to return.
