Omaha, NE – Residents across the Missouri River Valley should exercise extreme caution with outdoor activities today as a stretch of critical fire weather begins. While Tuesday brings a beautiful, sunny afternoon with a high near 86 degrees, the combination of dry fuels and gusty south winds has pushed fire danger to potentially extreme levels. Any brush fire ignited under these conditions will likely spread out of control within minutes, specifically in northeast Nebraska where the risk is highest through the end of the work week.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect for southwest Iowa and southeast Nebraska. While Tuesday stays dry, a significant shift arrives Thursday as a potent cold front moves through the region. Forecasters indicate a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Thursday, with a 15 percent probability that these storms could become severe. Commuters on I-80 and I-29 should prepare for a messy Thursday evening drive as rainfall totals reach up to a quarter of an inch.

The incoming front will bring an abrupt end to the unseasonable warmth. After reaching 83 degrees on Wednesday, temperatures will tumble to a high of only 65 degrees by Friday. This transition will be blustery, with south winds gusting as high as 28 mph on Wednesday before shifting to the northwest. This sharp drop in temperature will be noticeable for the Friday morning commute, requiring a return to heavier layers for those heading into the city.

Conditions are expected to remain unsettled through Thursday night with a 40 percent chance of lingering thunderstorms. While the midweek heat is a welcome change, the focus remains on the fire threat and the looming severe storm potential for Thursday.
