Two Chicago children ejected from Van after vehicle flips on I-57

ONARGA – Five people are in serious condition Sunday after a van overturned multiple times Saturday night on I-57.

According to Illinois State Police District 21, the one-car crash happened just before 7 pm Saturday near milepost 280. That’s when a 1997 Green Dodge Caravan driven by 46-year-old Jose Martinez of Chicago reportedly veered off the roadway for unknown reasons and overturned multiple times before coming to a rest.

Two children, ages 13 and 3, were ejected and partially ejected from the van while an infant inside at the time remained secure. The 8-month old infant was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The remaining four occupants of the van, including 40-year-old Denise Hernandez of Chicago, were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Illinois State Police report charges are pending investigation.

The scene at I-57 remained diverted to traffic by Illinois State Police for just over five hours before reopening early Sunday morning.
