Richmond, VA – A sharp temperature drop late tonight will bring freezing conditions across central Virginia, threatening crops and outdoor infrastructure just hours after elevated fire danger peaks Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Freeze Warning is in effect overnight through early Tuesday for central Virginia and parts of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, while a Frost Advisory covers eastern and southeastern Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Overnight lows will fall to 29°F in Louisa, 31°F in Farmville, and near 32–34°F across Richmond, Petersburg, and Tappahannock by daybreak Tuesday.

Before the cold arrives, dry air and gusty winds will elevate fire risk statewide Monday from 11 AM to 8 PM. Relative humidity will drop to 20–30%, with southwest winds at 10–15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph. Areas along I-95, including Richmond and Petersburg, and east toward Norfolk and Williamsburg face the highest risk for rapidly spreading fires.

Communities from South Hill to Emporia and Franklin should expect frost formation, while coastal areas like Norfolk and Virginia Beach stay slightly warmer in the low 40s. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should secure ignition sources such as cigarettes or equipment.

Cover sensitive plants, bring pets indoors, and avoid travel on rural roads where visibility may drop due to patchy frost early Tuesday. Cold conditions will persist through sunrise Tuesday, with additional advisories possible if temperatures drop further overnight.
