Lubbock, Texas – Fire danger will increase quickly by midday Sunday across the Caprock, where warm temperatures and breezy winds could allow fires to start and spread rapidly through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Rangeland Fire Danger Statement is in effect from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday. South winds between 5 and 20 mph combined with dry conditions will elevate the risk, especially during the afternoon peak heating hours.
Temperatures will climb into the 70 to 75 degree range across Lubbock, Plainview, Levelland, and surrounding communities. Along major routes including US-84 and US-62, open fields and dry grasses could ignite easily if exposed to sparks from vehicles or equipment.
The greatest concern centers on the combination of wind and low moisture, which can push flames quickly across rangeland. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and agricultural operations should use caution with machinery that could generate heat or sparks.
Residents should secure chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and report any smoke immediately. Conditions begin to improve after 9 p.m. as winds ease and temperatures fall, but elevated fire risk will persist until then.
