Wheaton, IL – The Wheaton Police Department has issued a warning about a sophisticated scam involving fraudulent pop-up computer alerts claiming to be from Microsoft Corporation.

According to the City of Wheaton Government’s Facebook post, numerous residents reported receiving these pop-ups, which direct them to call a phone number and subsequently attempt to defraud them through bank wire transfers, cryptocurrency transactions, or even face-to-face cash exchanges.

The Wheaton Police highlight the urgency scammers convey to trick victims into transferring money quickly, often misleading bank staff or loved ones about the purpose of the transfer. They stress that genuine government entities will not request payments over the phone.

For any concerns, residents can verify the legitimacy of such requests by contacting the Wheaton Police Department directly.
