According to the Peoria Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:57 p.m. Wednesday to the 1000 block of Western Avenue after a ShotSpotter alert indicated multiple rounds of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers were allegedly informed that two individuals had sustained gunshot wounds in the area.

Police said the 23-year-old male victim was located at a nearby gas station suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Officers immediately began life-saving efforts; however, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, a 19-year-old male, was allegedly found outside a nearby AutoZone store with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover, with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Authorities said the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The official cause of death will be determined by the Peoria County Coroner.
