Douglas, Ga. – Fires could spread out of control within minutes across inland southeast Georgia by mid-afternoon Sunday as dry conditions and gusty winds peak during the late-day hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for Coffee, Jeff Davis, and Atkinson counties, where north winds of 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph will combine with relative humidity dropping into the low to mid-20% range.
Communities including Douglas, Hazlehurst, and Pearson face the highest risk window between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., when fine fuels like grass and brush can ignite fires and spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and any spark—from equipment, vehicles, or debris burning—could trigger fast-moving fires. Local emergency officials warn that containment may be difficult under these conditions.
The خطر continues into Monday, when humidity could fall as low as 14% with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s, prompting a Fire Weather Watch from late morning through the evening hours.
Residents should secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and report smoke immediately. Additional warnings could be issued if conditions worsen into Monday evening.
