Sacramento, CA – Drivers heading into the Sierra face immediate shutdown risks as heavy snow piles up fast, cutting visibility and forcing chain controls on key mountain routes through Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, for elevations above 5,000 feet across the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades. Snow totals are expected to reach 12 to 18 inches, with up to 2 feet at the highest peaks. Snowfall rates could hit 1 to 2 inches per hour at times, while southwest wind gusts climb to 50 mph.

Conditions along Interstate 80 near Donner Pass and Highway 50 through Echo Summit may deteriorate quickly, with Caltrans warning of chain requirements and possible temporary road closures. Visibility could drop below 500 feet during heavier bursts, especially during the morning and midday hours Wednesday.

Mountain travel is strongly discouraged. If travel is unavoidable, carry chains, charge mobile devices, and prepare for extended delays. Blowing snow and slick pavement will create hazardous conditions even where plows are active.

The storm begins easing late Wednesday evening, but additional advisories could follow as colder air lingers into the region.
