Phoenix, AZ – Drivers along the Arizona-California border could face sudden visibility drops and dangerous crosswinds within hours as gusts ramp up to 40 mph by late Tuesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, a Wind Advisory takes effect at 3 p.m. Tuesday for southwest Imperial County and western Joshua Tree National Park, lasting until 8 a.m. Wednesday. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected, especially along Interstate 8 and exposed desert corridors.

Blowing dust may reduce visibility to near 500 feet at times, particularly between El Centro and the California-Arizona line. High-profile vehicles on I-8 and I-10 could be pushed off course, creating a risk for rollovers. Local agencies warn that unsecured outdoor items may become airborne.

Communities in Yuma County and far western Arizona could also feel the edge of these winds Tuesday evening, with brief travel disruptions possible during peak driving hours. Motorists should delay non-essential trips, keep both hands on the wheel, and avoid passing semis.

Winds ease gradually after sunrise Wednesday, but additional advisories could be issued if conditions redevelop later this week.
