JASPER COUNTY, Ind. — Residents and travelers in Jasper County have a new reason to celebrate as Governor Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) proudly opened the doors to the $40 million Kankakee Welcome Center on southbound I-65.

Replacing a facility from 1988, the modern rest stop showcases Indiana heritage and landscape, blending features inspired by the state’s wind power industry and local natural beauty. From ample parking to interior exhibits highlighting regional icons like the Meadow Lakes Wind Farm and Purdue University astronauts, the center promises an enhanced experience for all.

The ambitious project, executed by Hasse Construction, also features a walking trail, dog park, and playground for travelers passing through. As part of INDOT’s expansive Rest Area and Welcome Center Improvement Plan, the new facility is just a glimpse of the advancements planned for the state by 2034.
