Chicago, IL – A 90-year-old resident of Cook County has become the first victim of West Nile virus this year.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed the sad news on Wednesday. Initial symptoms emerged in early August, leading to a swift decline.

With 12 nonfatal cases reported, vigilance against mosquito bites remains crucial, especially for those over 50 and immunocompromised individuals.

As summer continues, health officials stress preventive measures such as insect repellents and eliminating stagnant water. Let this unfortunate incident remind us all to protect ourselves during mosquito season.
