GRUNDY COUNTY, IL – A former Illinois firefighter and Verona city council member, Robert Schaffnit, finds himself behind bars with a bond set at $250,000 after allegations of sexual abuse against a child.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office arrested Schaffnit on Monday following a month long investigation on charges of sexually assaulting a minor, sending shockwaves through the community and raising concerns about local safety.

Schaffnit was arrested on multiple felony charges, including Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault, Criminal Sexual Assault, and Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.  The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation in June, revealing an alleged history of disturbing pattern of abuse of a child Schaffnit knew over the last two years.

Additional charges are expected to be filed in this case, as well as potentially in another ongoing investigation.
