KANKAKEE, IL – The Riverwoods Apartments, a 125-unit complex housing Kankakee’s low-income seniors, is set for a massive green overhaul.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a loan commitment of over $550,000 to Related Affordable, a part of the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP).
The GRRP funds will enable the installation of solar panels, attic insulation, energy-efficient LED lighting, and vital heating system upgrades at Riverwoods Apartments. This development reflects HUD’s commitment to establishing a more equitable housing system, emphasizing energy efficiency and climate resilience.
Diane M. Shelley, HUD’s Regional Administrator, stated, “HUD is ensuring low-income families have improved access to a healthier, energy-efficient home.” Joining Shelley for the announcement on Monday, September 18, will be Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis, Senior Vice President of Related Midwest, Sarah Wick, and a resident representative.
Related Affordable’s Sarah Wick added, “This award from HUD supports our vision of making affordable housing both environmentally sustainable and community-focused.”
The GRRP, funded through President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, aims to elevate HUD-assisted housing by focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and resilience against changing climate conditions.
