KANKAKEE COUNTY, IL – The Kankakee County Humane Society (KCHS) is feeling the love from its community after issuing a plea for canned puppy food. The shelter’s request this week was met with an outpouring of support, with donations pouring in from all corners of the community.
KCHS had taken to social media to request more canned puppy food for its resident canines. Their request was met with an overwhelming response, and boxes of donated food and supplies flooded the shelter’s lobby from various online retailers such as Chewy and Amazon.
The donations were not just limited to puppy food, as the shelter’s resident cats and dogs also received new toys and treats.
One donor, Kaylle Picker, shared her reason for donating, saying, “Without local shelters as a resource, our community would be in a very dark place. Most of us can get on Chewy or Amazon and send a case of food or supplies when they reach their hand out for help.”
Shelter Director Jordan Chapman expressed gratitude for the support Friday afternoon, noting the donations received totaled around $2,000 worth of supplies. Among the donations were 65 flats of canned puppy food, four jugs of cat litter, two bags of ProPlan dry puppy food, 13 cases of cat food, four cases of kitten food, eight marrow bones, five stuffed toys, and a cat hammock. Chapman estimates that the donated puppy food will last not only for the current group of puppies but also for the next 5-6 groups that come through the shelter.
The Kankakee County Humane Society has a wishlist on Chewy for those who wish to donate, and the shelter’s FedEx delivery driver has been kept busy with the continual stream of deliveries. A shelter wishlist can be found by clicking here.
