KANKAKEE, Ill. — Kankakee County recorded the highest unemployment rate in the state of Illinois for the month of January, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The jobless rate stood at 6.1 percent, marking a significant rise from the previous month.

Rockford, which had held the number one spot for nearly a year, fell to second place last month, recording an unemployment rate of 5.9 percent.

Despite the recent setback, Kankakee’s January unemployment rate is still an improvement from the 6.9 percent jobless rate recorded in January 2022.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security has not released any further details about the factors that contributed to Kankakee County’s high unemployment rate.
