MOMENCE – No one will be allowed back into their homes until an electrician certifies homes are safe after crews struggled to cut power during a freak electrical fire Wednesday afternoon.

At least six fires hit homes on three streets in Momence Wednesday afternoon, including homes on Ohio, Locust, and Walnut streets. Crews were unable to cut power to the homes, even after electrical meters were removed.

At least one home had its wiring burned up entirely during the event.

COMED representatives were at a loss to explain the incident.

One firefighter was shocked Wednesday, but did not seek medical treatment.
