Aurora, IL – A man cleaning out an office inadvertently caused a soft lockdown of several schools and a daycare facility in Aurora on Wednesday after he was seen carrying a rifle.
At 12:16 PM, police were dispatched to the 1900 block of West Galena Boulevard following reports of an armed man entering an office building. According to the Aurora Police Department, the man, identified later in Yorkville had reportedly discovered an uncased shotgun while cleaning out the office. He was not brandishing the weapon or threatening anyone.
Officers, including the Aurora Police Department Special Response Team, evacuated the building’s occupants and conducted a thorough search. The building was declared safe after the man was found to have left the premises without incident. Witnesses had called 9-1-1 upon seeing him exit with the shotgun.
As a precaution, several nearby schools and a daycare facility were placed on a soft lockdown during the investigation. The lockdown was lifted around 1:20 PM, and normal operations resumed. The man had a valid FOID/CCL and no intent to harm anyone. Police confirmed no charges are expected to be filed.
