URBANA, IL – A routine traffic stop turned into a high-drama chase in Urbana last night when police apprehended a 17-year-old male, a parolee with a gun charge history, after he fled from a stopped vehicle.

According to police reports it began at 9:23 p.m. when Urbana officers pulled over a rideshare driver for a stop sign violation. The passenger reportedly ran from the scene, leading to a foot pursuit. Canine units later discovered a loaded handgun along the escape route.

The youth, who was under parole at the time, now faces aggravated weapon charges and may be tried as an adult, pending the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office’s motion. The rideshare driver was unconnected to the incident.
