Kankakee, IL – The Illinois State Police are currently investigating the death of Jim A Krumwiede, a 50-year-old inmate, who reportedly died by hanging while in custody at the Kankakee County Detention Center.

Krumwiede, found guilty in November of felony domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence, faced a potential sentence of 2-5 years in prison. His death on January 2, 2024, followed an incident in his cell on January 1, where he was found unresponsive. Despite medical intervention, he was later declared dead at Riverside Medical Center.

The Kankakee County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on January 3, which indicated preliminary findings of death due to hanging. Further tests are pending to confirm the final cause of death. The ongoing investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Coroner’s Office aims to ascertain the definitive circumstances surrounding Krumwiede’s death.
