The Libertyville Police Department has issued an alert to local residents about the rise of “gypsy” scams in the area. These scams involve unsolicited offers from individuals claiming to provide home improvement services at significantly low costs, which ultimately prove to be either substandard or entirely fraudulent.
According to the police, typical scenarios include offers to seal driveways with supposedly leftover materials, only for the homeowner to discover the use of inferior, ineffective coatings. Another common ruse involves promises of necessary home repairs, such as roofing or painting, with the scammer demanding upfront payment and then disappearing without carrying out any work.
Residents are advised to safeguard themselves by engaging with reputable, local businesses and verifying the credibility of any contractor who approaches them unsolicited. The Libertyville Police urge anyone who suspects they have fallen victim to such scams to report the incident by calling their direct line at 847-362-8310.
