Shorewood, IL – A Shorewood man was arrested Wednesday on kidnapping and obstruction of justice charges after reportedly defying a court order to hand over his daughter.

Richard A. Caragol, 47, attended a custody hearing at the Will County Courthouse where Judge David Garcia ordered him to immediately transfer custody of his 13-year-old daughter to her mother, citing reported serious endangerment concerns. Despite the judge’s order, Caragol later returned to the courtroom without his daughter and attempted to obtain an order of protection, which Judge Garcia denied.

According to Sheriff Mike Kelley, after deputies failed to locate the child at the courthouse, they went to Caragol’s residence on Woodland Drive. Caragol refused to cooperate, claiming he was not home. Officers breached the door and found the girl unharmed.

Caragol was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Will County Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Facility. He is awaiting his next court appearance.
