Logansport, IN – A dramatic escape unfolded at the Cass County Detention Center on December 31, 2023, when inmate Gerardo Grimaldo Perez, 25, escaped after concealing himself in the facility’s ceiling.
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, the escape occurred around 12:12 PM as Perez took advantage of inmate work duties involving trash disposal. Perez, originally from Logansport, IN, reportedly managed to climb over a wall and escape through a door used by other inmate workers. The situation escalated quickly, with Cass County Corrections Officers, Logansport Police, and Cass County Deputies immediately responding to the incident.
Following his escape, Perez shed his jail attire in the 400 block of North Street and was apprehended just nine minutes later in the 700 block of Market Street.
Sheriff Ed Schroder commended the quick actions of local law enforcement and corrections officers in recapturing Perez, who was in custody for a probation violation on a check fraud charge. The incident has prompted an intensive review of security protocols at the detention center. Authorities are undertaking an after-action review to address and rectify any security shortcomings.
