COOLSPRING TOWNSHIP, Ind. – A calm a Thursday evening was shattered in La Porte County when a call, seemingly about a pedestrian struck by a car, took a dark turn.

According to La Porte County Sheriff’s Office reports, officers arrived expecting to manage a vehicular incident, were faced with a more chilling scene. A Michigan City man, identified as Travis S. Clemons, 25, lay motionless near a vehicle. But when an officer discovered a gunshot wound on the victim, the investigation was turned upside down.

Clemons was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries early Friday morning. Dawson W. Mahoney, 22, has since been charged with Clemons’ murder and is now held on a $1 million cash-only bond.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
