Indianapolis, IN – Five tornadoes swept across Central Indiana on Wednesday evening, with Shelby, Rush, and Decatur counties bearing the brunt of these weather events.
Two tornadoes were rated EF-1, demonstrating winds up to 110 MPH, and two were classified as EF-0, with winds reaching 85 MPH. A fifth tornado, while visibly documented, was rated EF-Unknown due to a lack of significant damage which precluded a precise wind speed classification.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the tornadoes caused various degrees of damage. Some areas saw minor structural harm, like shingles torn from homes and gutters detached. The natural landscape bore the greater impact, with numerous trees uprooted or significantly damaged. Despite this, more severe property damage was largely avoided, with grain silos and most homes near the tornado paths emerging unscathed.
These events were part of a series of storms that passed through the region, and another round of thunderstorms is anticipated to hit later today. Although most storms are expected to be sub-severe, there remains an isolated risk for large hail and damaging winds, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and ensure their safety as conditions develop.
