South Bend, IN – The South Bend Police Department is alerting residents to an alarming increase in Kia vehicle thefts as summer approaches.
Police report that several newer model Kia vehicles have been targeted in thefts or attempted thefts in recent weeks. Some of these stolen vehicles have been recovered. The spike in thefts follows a 2022 alert about a viral video demonstrating a method to steal newer model Kia and Hyundai vehicles.
In response, Kia and Hyundai released free theft deterrent software for millions of vehicles lacking immobilizers. Vehicle owners are urged to contact their dealerships for software updates or recall notices.
To protect your vehicle, consider using a steering wheel lock, parking in well-lit areas, never leaving your vehicle unattended with the engine running, and always locking your car and taking your keys.
