Des Moines, IA – Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Sioux County due to a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in commercial layer chickens.

According to the USDA, the proclamation, effective immediately through June 27, 2024, allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture, and other agencies to assist with containment and disinfection efforts. The measures include tracking, rapid detection, and regulatory waivers for commercial vehicles responding to the outbreak.

Officials emphasize that recent HPAI detections pose no immediate public health threat and assure that poultry products remain safe for consumption. Producers noticing symptoms in their flocks are advised to contact a veterinarian promptly.
