Watseka, IL – Asbestos abatement is set to begin at Watseka High School on March 20th, 2023. The project will involve the removal of fitting insulation from an air handling room adjacent to the cafeteria.

According to a letter sent to Watseka High School parents and staff from Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds Reby Andren and Riley Andriano, all work will occur in strict accordance with the regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Department of Public Health. The work area will also be evaluated and sampled prior to occupancy.

The letter assures parents and staff that at no time will the work pose a hazard to the students or staff. Asbestos exposure can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer and mesothelioma, and has been linked to the development of other respiratory diseases.

Asbestos was a commonly used building material until the 1970s when it was found to be a health hazard. The material can still be found in older buildings, including schools, and must be properly removed by trained professionals.

The abatement process is expected to take several weeks, and precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. Parents and staff are encouraged to contact the school district with any questions or concerns.

Watseka High School is part of the Iroquois County CUSD #9 and is located at 1411 W. Lafayette Street in Watseka, IL. The district superintendent, Dr. David Andriano, can be reached at david.andriano@watsekaschools.org or by phone at 815.432.4931.
