Braidwood, IL – As warmer weather begins to arrive, Braidwood Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) has issued an important update regarding the community’s tornado siren protocols. In a statement released by the ESDA, residents are instructed that the silencing of outdoor warning sirens should not be misconstrued as an all-clear signal during tornado events.

The primary function of these sirens is to alert individuals who are outdoors to the imminent danger of tornadoes, instructing them to seek shelter and obtain further details from reliable sources.

For comprehensive updates during tornado threats, Braidwood’s ESDA strongly recommends using multiple alert systems. These include subscribing to NOAA weather radio broadcasts, installing mobile weather alert applications, and staying tuned to local radio and television stations. These measures ensure that residents receive continuous updates on tornado watches and warnings, as the dynamic nature of tornadoes requires ongoing information rather than a single alert.

Furthermore, the agency reminds residents that outdoor warning sirens are tested at 10:00 am on the first Tuesday of each month, in compliance with Illinois state law, which should not be confused with an actual tornado alert. The ESDA’s commitment to public safety is reflected in their rigorous adherence to the FEMA Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program standards, ensuring the community is well-informed and prepared for severe weather emergencies.
