Indianapolis, IN — Central Indiana is on high alert as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis forecasts a severe weather outbreak for the region later today, May 7, 2024. The area faces a heightened risk of tornadoes, particularly between 6 PM and 10 PM, with the potential for EF2 or stronger tornadoes to develop.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring two distinct waves of thunderstorms poised to sweep across the area. The initial wave, expected between 9 AM and 12 PM, should bring strong, though generally sub-severe, weather conditions. However, it is the second wave, forecasted to initiate around 3 PM and persist through the evening, that poses a significant threat. This wave could generate severe thunderstorms capable of producing EF2+ tornadoes and giant hail, some possibly reaching the size of baseballs.
In addition to tornadoes and hail, the NWS warns of damaging wind gusts that could exceed 60 to 70 mph, capable of downing trees and power lines. Localized flooding from heavy rainfall is also a serious concern. The most severe conditions are anticipated in areas marked under an enhanced risk category on the NWS severe weather outlook.
Residents throughout Central Indiana, including the Indianapolis metropolitan area, are advised to prepare for these severe conditions. Authorities recommend securing loose outdoor items, reviewing safety plans, and staying tuned to local weather updates as the situation develops.
